If you happened to be in Dublin City Centre last Friday, you likely will have come across hordes of orange-clad techies getting up to some quite unusual tasks. The third year of Techies4TempleStreet, the charity fundraising event held in aid of Temple Street Children’s University Hospital, was the biggest to date. Some 130 teams, comprising over 1,000 competitors, took to the streets of Dublin to complete a wide range of challenges spread across the city. As the chosen PR agency of leading Irish and multinational tech companies, the Comit team jumped at the chance to raise some much-needed funds with our fellow techies.

The event kicked off in the RDS, Ballsbridge, where teams gathered, people mingled and instructions were given. A mobile app for the event utilised location services to guide teams to the activities. After multiple attempts at capturing an adequate group photo for our app profile, the ambitiously and boldly self-titled Comit Quistadors set off.
The activities and challenges of the day required quick thinking, teamwork, creativity and on occasion a healthy amount of peer pressure. The initial few locations threw up questions on topics ranging from presidents of the United States, to Patrick Kavanagh’s poetry. Luckily, we quickly discovered that our team has wide and diverse interests, and largely handled the questions of the day with near-consummate ease.

However, the intellectual backslapping was short-lived as the Comit Quistadors faced their first daunting physical challenge of the day, involving a six-person pair of wooden skis and a twenty-foot patch of grass. Despite early close encounters with dreaded faceplants, the team kept their footing and through co-ordination and teamwork, managed to come first place.
The remainder of the day was fun-filled and spontaneous. It involved quite possibly the most productive hour ever seen in an Irish pub, a statue hunt around St. Stephen’s Green and a final dash back to the RDS for a five o’clock finish. The entire event was fantastically organised and competitors returned to both a free meal and a well-earned pint or two. Winners were announced and rewarded and while the Comit Quistadors didn’t take to the stage, the feeling of accomplishment and goodwill was all we needed to cap off a great day.

While the day was full of close-knit teambuilding, healthy competition and general enjoyment, the impact made by this whole event is by far the most rewarding final reflection. Over €225,000 was raised for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital, with our PR agency contributing a fantastic €3,675. The money and support raised for the event will help fund equipment, research, the redevelopment of hospital facilities and ultimately, it will save children’s lives every single day. This thoroughly enjoyable day makes such a significant, positive impact and Comit is proud to have been involved in such a worthy initiative. Bring on next year!
